Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has released the latest figures regarding the waste generation and recycling of household waste among the 27 member countries (EU27). Singapore's Oculus Takes over Aretae recycling facility

Singapor | Oculus, a former contact lenses manufacturer from Singapore, says it has entered into a reverse takeover agreement with waste recycling and carbon credit firm Aretae in a deal worth US$410 million (Euro 282 million). As part of the deal, Oculus will issue 1.2 billion shares at US$0.34 (Euro 0.24)each to key Aretae shareholders, who would provide a guarantee of at least US$34 (Euro 0.24) million in total earnings for 2008 and 2009. Aretae has waste recycling projects in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, with 30 greenhouse gas reduction projects that are expected to generate 50 million tonnes of carbon credits, Oculus says. Firms and countries with targets to cut emissions under the Kyoto Protocol may buy credits from such projects to cut greenhouse gases in developing countries. ... more
Veolia to expand in Chinese waste market

France-based Veolia Environnement, one of the world's leading waste management companies, is anticipating 20% annual growth in its Chinese activities through acquisition of domestic companies, opening of new facilities and bidding for more government projects. In 2006, Veolia's turnover in China was around US$ 250 million. The company expects the Chinese government to invest more money in turning waste into energy, as more people migrate to the cities and thereby produce more waste. At the moment, China generates around 1 lb of waste per capita per day but only 20% is properly treated. "The government has doubled efforts to improve the situation by inputting more money and enhancing public awareness of waste sorting", says Jorge Mora, CEO of Veolia Environment Asia. ... more

April 01, 2007. Enormous business opportunities will be created in Asia once the region has implemented better policies to promote resource conservation and management. This was one of the conclusions of the 3R Workshop on Effective Management and Resource Use Efficiency in East and Southeast Asia which was organised jointly by the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations and the Institute of Global Environment and Society. The event took place in Manila, the Philippines. Asia's cities alone are generating 760 000 tonnes of solid waste per day, a figure that is expected to increase to 1.8 million tonnes by 2025. According to ADB's analysis, the waste management market - including environmental infrastructure and technology - is expected to grow at an annual rate of between 10% and 12%. In the UK, a £600 million (US$1.14 billion) waste contract aimed at further reducing reliance on landfill while boosting recycling rates has been signed by three local authorities and Waste Recycling Group (WRG). The 25-year Private Finance Initiative between Reading Borough Council, Bracknell Forest Borough Council and Wokingham District Council - known as the Re3 Waste Partnership - is designed to establish a long-term, sustainable solution to dealing with waste produced by households in the three council areas. The partnership was established following consultation with local people and communities in all three local authority areas.
