* Harris Waste Management
Harris Waste Management Group Inc. of Peachtree City, Georgia, USA, has announced several recent equipment sales. Todd Heller Inc. of North Hampton, Pennsylvania, Berg Recycling Inc. of Baltimore, and CFC Recycling Inc. of Tullahoma, Tennessee, have all purchased HBL 66-16 stationary baler/loggers. These feature a charge box two feet longer than those on competing models, as well as US-manufactured power units, valves and controls. Four other US companies - Garret Recycling, Waukesha Iron and Metal Inc., MAW Salvage and Augustine Metals - have bought H562 transportable shear/baler/loggers, while Corporacion Aceros Arequipa SA of Pisco in Peru has purchased an HS 98115 shredder.

A major expansion of its operations has been announced by Northwest Recycling of Houston, Texas, USA, which is owned by John Newell and Alan Walker. A full-service, 23-acre, US$ 25 million steel scrap recycling facility is to be located on deep water at the Houston Ship Channel and will feature a 124 SXS shredder from The Shredder Company, LLC of Canutillo, Texas. The facility will handle both ferrous and non-ferrous material.
With its installation expected to be completed late this summer, the 7000 HP shredder boasts a 3660DFR smart feeding system, allowing for processing surges of up to 400 short tons per hour. The shredder has been designed to process a high percentage of No 1 and No 2 scrap, and will handle bales of steel scrap. Downstream equipment features a split conveyor line with double magnets to produce very clean and dense shredded steel scrap. The Pittsburgh-based US Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) has confirmed that the recycling rate for the metal remained at 70.7% in 2004. However, the total tonnage of steel recycled increased by more 7.2 million tonnes thanks in no small measure to an expanding market for the metal. Well-known Dutch metal recycler Gebr. Gerrits Beheer of Helmond has bought a heavy media plant from ProTec Srl of Genoa, Italy. Expected to come on stream in the autumn, the new sink-and-float plant will replace an existing separation system which has been in operation for almost 15 years.
