To bring its regulations in line with World Trade Organisation (WTO) requirements, Ukraine’s government lowered the export duties on scrap metals, which is expected to take 6-8 years. The One51 group of Ireland, continues its takeover strategy by acquiring two British recycling firms. It has bought Howarth Metals in Manchester and another called Howcan, which is an offshoot of Howarth Metals.
The group has been extending its links to the waste management and recycling businesses in a number of locations and One51 CEO Philip Lynch has made it clear that he will continue to expand in these key market segments.
It was reported by news paper Irish Examiner that the company is also on the verge of a big deal in the US. ... more

Metal One Corporation, Japan and ELG Haniel of Germany have established a stainless blend scrap processing joint venture in Sodegaura, Japan. The joint venture will supply materials for offshore stainless makers mainly in China and growing countries, according to sources. ELG Haniel controls 51% of the joint venture with 49% share by Metal One. Oji Paper Co., Japan's largest paper producer, says it falsified the amount of recycled materials used to produce printer and photocopier paper. Masatomo Nakamura, president of Nippon Paper Group Inc., Oji's next-biggest rival, said last week he will step down after the company disclosed it had been falsifying data on paper products since 1996. Oji's Shinoda says he will stay on as president.

Without pricing details given, Germany’s KMR group has acquired the total stainless steel scrap activities of Capricorn Stainless BV from the Netherlands. Through its subsidiary company KMR Stainless BV, the German group, headquartered in Mülheim on the Ruhr, buys Capricorn from its parent company Fondel Commodities BV and will become the third largest scrap dealer in the world, KMR states. ... more
