Ghana struggles to retain scrap

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. To help provide adequate raw material for its domestic steel manufacturing industry, the government of Ghana has been called upon to establish a legislative instrument to ban exports of scrap metal from the country. The steel producers are struggling to compete for supplies because scrap metal exporters are prepared to pay more to attract material from local dealers. Ghana’s parliamentary committee recently visited West Africa’s largest steel manufacturing plant at Tema, home to Wahome Steel Ltd. The company’s Managing Director Isaac Yeboah said the business could not operate at full capacity due to a lack of scrap which accounts for 70% of its raw material input. The country’s scrap export ban has proved ineffective owing to a lack of enforcement. ‘Currently, Wahome Steel Ltd requires about 200 tonnes of steel scrap a day to operate fully,’ Mr Yeboah explained. ‘On average, the company is able to purchase close to 90 tonnes per day.’ Meanwhile, Ghana’s scrap exporters ... more
Container ship rates to remain firm

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. Solid demand for consumer goods from developing nations should continue to push up container ship rates during 2007, according to John Coustas, Chief Executive Officer at Greek shipping company Danaos Corporation. ‘Unless something dramatic happens in the world’s economies, I can’t see any kind of correction happening this year,’ Mr Coustas told a recent maritime shipping conference in New York. Global shipyard order books are full through 2009 but, despite this glut of new vessels scheduled for launch in the near to medium term, demand should serve to maintain firm market conditions, he argued. Danaos Corp. went public last October and has a fleet of 31 container ships, with 23 more on order for delivery by 2010. The ships haul containers from developing nations such as China to consumers in markets including the USA. Last November, the company bought three used container ships from A P Moeller-Maersk which it subsequently leased back to the Danish shipping giant on a five-yea ... more
Focus to fall on energy taxes

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. According to EU Tax Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs, taxation is a powerful and effective instrument that can help achieve the EU’s ambitious energy and climate change objectives at minimum costs. The Commissioner has also underlined his intention to concentrate on further developing energy taxation at EU level during the second half of his mandate. Mr Kovacs wants to launch a discussion on possible ways forward in a green paper on market-based instruments being drafted under the leadership of Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas. He says that market-based instruments such as taxation represent the most direct and transparent way to implement the polluter-pays principle. This discussion could lead to a legislative proposal as part of a revision of the 2003 Energy Tax Directive. ... more
Panda paper

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. A Chinese animal centre is making sure nothing goes to waste with its proposal to turn panda dung into paper. Liao Jun, a researcher at Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base, says the idea came to workers during a visit to Thailand where they came across paper made from elephant dung. They thought fibre-rich panda droppings would produce an even finer quality paper and are in talks with several paper mills. Jing Jing, Ke Bi, Ya Ya and dozens of other pandas living at the Chengdu breeding base produce around 200 tonnes of dung each year, which consists mainly of bamboo and fibre. The animals lack an efficient digestive tract and absorb less than 20% of what they eat. It is hoped waste from the pandas will be turned into reams of office paper and rolls of wrapping paper. The researchers are aiming to bring a production line on stream by next year. Mr Liao says: ‘We are not interested in doing this for the profits but to recycle the waste. It’s environmentally friendly, we can use the pap ... more
Smelters offer recycling route for brominated plastics

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. Integrated metals smelters are ‘an appropriate recycling route’ for waste electronics materials with plastics-containing brominated flame retardants, according to the European Brominated Flame Retardant Industry Panel (EBFRIP). The comment follows a full-scale trial held at a metals smelter in Belgium to assess the technical feasibility of treating mixed waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Carried out in co-operation with the plastics manufacturers’ association PlasticsEurope, the trial confirmed integrated metal smelters as a suitable recycling route for WEEE materials given that ‘precious metals can be recovered and recycled and the plastic content can serve as an energy source and reducing agent’, according to EBFRIP. During the trial, two thirds of the plastics’ energy content was used to replace coke and fuel oil while approximately one third was recovered as increased steam production. EBFRIP says treatment of mixed WEEE materials in this way does not a ... more
New role for tyre rubber

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

August 01, 2007. United States | An engineered rubber powder called PolyDyne can replace a significant proportion of the oil needed for the manufacture of many synthetic rubber and other petrochemical products, according to industrial polymer manufacturer Lehigh Technologies, Inc. of Naples, Florida, USA. The company manufactures PolyDyne by grinding rubber from used tyres into an ultra-fine powder. ‘Seeing the vast amounts of waste in tyre junkyards across the USA inspired us to seek a solution for turning scrap tyres into a resource that can be recycled and manufactured into a new, useful material,’ says Lehigh’s Chief Operating Officer Anthony Cialone. His company suggests that anything from car parts to plastic refuse cans, as well as high-tech spray coatings and shoe soles, can be created using substantial loadings of engineered rubber powder derived from used tyres, thereby reducing the dependency on petroleum and saving half a billion gallons of oil each year. Scrap tyres coarsely ground ... more
Copper usage continues to rise

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. World copper demand increased last year and has continued to rise in 2007. The International Copper Study Group (ICSG) estimates growth in 2007 at 4.2% compared with a 2006 increase of 3.3%. Around 41% of the copper used in Europe comes from recycling and this percentage could climb even higher, it is argued. Meanwhile, the European Copper Institute claims the red metal can play a key role in improving energy efficiency. The institute is calling for more research into widening the uses of copper - for example, in hospitals’ medical systems or in highly-efficient motor-driven systems. Increasing the amount of copper in electrical equipment can reduce energy losses by up to 70%, according to the institute. ‘Energy efficiency represents the potential for global energy savings of some 400 million tonnes oil equivalent per year,’ says Professor Ronnie Belmans, President of the International Electricity Union. It is claimed that widespread use of highly-efficient motor-driven systems ... more
Say ‘I do’ in a disposable wedding dress

May 01, 2007. She has designed throw-away clothes, dishes and textiles out of paper. Now Finland’s Tuija Asta Järvenpää has found a new market: disposable wedding dresses. Prototypes have been made out of shiny, translucent white paper and have been designed for one-trip use only. The basic model can be styled with various prints as well as ornamental cut-in patterns and folds, and is available in medium and large sizes. With this latest initiative, Ms Järvenpää aims to show that even disposable products can be valuable. Now working in a design studio in Helsinki, she was educated at the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. By creating products that are explicitly designed for a short life-span, she is looking to offer an alternative that will not only help render people’s lives more comfortable but also gradually change their patterns of behaviour. The wedding dresses made out of paper were introduced during an exhibition at the Kunsthalle in Helsinki. A ... more
Ships pollute more than cars

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

May 01, 2007. Ocean-going vessels produce greater quantities of the lethal air pollutant sulphur dioxide than all the world’s cars, trucks and buses combined, according to a study released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). The report calls for international regulators to move aggressively to curb emissions from the ‘bunker fuel’ used by freight vessels that contains an average of 27 000 parts per million of sulphur dioxide. ‘International ships are one of the world’s largest, virtually uncontrolled sources of air pollution,’ according to Alan C. Lloyd, President of the ICCT. ‘Air pollution from diesel trucks and buses in Europe, Japan and the USA has declined steadily for over a decade. At the same time, air pollution from international ships is rising virtually unchecked.’ The report found that, in 2001, heavy-duty diesel trucks, buses and cars burned more than a billion tonnes of fuel and emitted 2.2 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide - or SOX. The same yea ... more
